The classical Panchakarma Therapy is comprehensive method of internal purification of the body by five special types of Ayurvedic treatment procedures, namely – Vamana, Virechana, Nasya, Vasti and Raktamoksha.
1. Vamana: Therapeutic vomiting to eliminate excess Kapha from the body.
2. Virechana: Controlled purgation to expel excess Pitta through the intestines.
3. Basti: Medicated enema therapy to balance Vata and cleanse the colon.
4. Nasya: Nasal administration of medicated substances to clear head and sinus channels.
5. Raktamokshana: Bloodletting therapy to remove toxins from the blood and balance Pitta
Panchakarma helps maintain health and cure disease by cleansing the body of accumulated toxins (known as ama) and restoring the natural balance of the three doshas—Vata, Pitta, and Kapha. In Ayurveda, disease is believed to arise from the imbalance of these doshas and the accumulation of waste in the body. Panchakarma addresses these root causes by deeply detoxifying the tissues, strengthening digestion (agni), and improving the function of bodily systems. Regular Panchakarma treatments enhance immunity (ojas), rejuvenate the body, support mental clarity, and delay aging, making it a powerful preventive approach to health. When illness is already present, Panchakarma therapies are tailored to the individual’s constitution and condition, working to eliminate the underlying imbalances and promote natural healing. Thus, Panchakarma not only treats diseases effectively but also preserves health by maintaining internal harmony and vitality
In Panchakarma the procedures are divided into three phases:
- Poorvakarma (preparatory procedures)
- Pradhan Karma(main therapies)
- Paschat Karma(post-therapy procedures)
While Pradhan Karma involves the main detoxification treatments, Poorvakarma and Paschat Karma are crucial for ensuring the therapy’s effectiveness and maintaining balance in the body before and after the primary treatments.
POORVAKARMA (Preparatory Procedures)
Prepares the body for the main Panchakarma procedures by loosening toxins and preparing the tissues for deeper cleansing.
Snehana (Oleation):
- Internal Oleation: Involves consuming medicated ghee or oils (depending on the individual’s constitution and condition) to lubricate the digestive system, soften toxins, and promote their mobilization.
- External Oleation: Full-body oil massage using warm herbal oils to soften and loosen toxins from the skin and muscles.

PRADHANA KARMA (Main Therapies)
VAMANA KARMA (Emesis Therapy)
Vamana Karma is one of the five purification therapies (Panchakarma) in Ayurveda, primarily aimed at expelling excess Kapha dosha from the body through controlled therapeutic vomiting. It is typically performed under medical supervision after a preparatory process involving internal and external oleation (Snehana) and sweating (Swedana), followed by administration of emetic substances. This treatment is particularly recommended during the spring season when Kapha is naturally aggravated.
The benefits of Vamana are extensive. It helps in detoxifying the body, enhancing digestion, boosting metabolism, and improving respiratory health. Vamana is particularly effective in treating conditions like asthma, allergies, chronic cold, obesity, and skin diseases. It also helps in achieving mental clarity, emotional balance, and overall rejuvenation by resetting the body’s natural healing mechanisms. Regular practice, as advised by an Ayurvedic doctor, can lead to a stronger immune system and a more vibrant state of health.
VIRECHANA KARMA (Purgation Therapy)
Virechana Karma is a key purification therapy in Ayurveda, focused on cleansing the body by eliminating toxins through controlled purgation. It is one of the main treatments of Panchakarma, primarily aimed at balancing the Pitta dosha. Before Virechana, the body is prepared with internal and external oleation and sudation therapies to loosen and mobilize toxins. Under the careful guidance of an experienced Ayurvedic practitioner, Virechana ensures a safe, gentle, and effective detoxification process that supports overall health and vitality.
The benefits of Virechana are profound. It helps in improving digestion, regulating metabolism, and enhancing liver and gut health. Virechana is especially effective in managing conditions related to Pitta imbalance, such as skin disorders, acidity, migraines, jaundice, and inflammatory diseases. It also promotes mental clarity, emotional stability, and rejuvenation by removing deep-seated toxins from the body. With regular practice as advised by an Ayurvedic expert, Virechana can significantly boost immunity, energy levels, and overall well-being.
VASTI KARMA (Enema Therapy)
Vasti Karma is a specialized detoxification therapy in Ayurveda, primarily involving the administration of medicated oils, decoctions, or herbal preparations through the rectum. It is one of the most important treatments in Panchakarma, especially effective for balancing the Vata dosha. Vasti is considered a powerful cleansing and rejuvenating procedure that works deeply on the colon, the main seat of Vata, and helps eliminate accumulated toxins. The therapy is carefully performed under the supervision of skilled Ayurvedic practitioners to ensure safe and effective results.
Types of Vasti

two types.

When done regularly as prescribed, Vasthi promotes a healthier, more balanced body and mind, leading to enhanced longevity and quality of life.
NASYA KARMA (Errhine Therapy)
Nasya Karmais an important Ayurvedic therapy that involves the administration of medicated oils, powders, or herbal extracts through the nasal passages. It is one of the key procedures in Panchakarma and is primarily used to cleanse and rejuvenate the head and neck region. The nose is considered the gateway to the head in Ayurveda, and Nasya helps remove accumulated toxins from the sinuses, throat, and brain channels. This therapy is performed under expert guidance, ensuring a safe and effective purification process that brings balance to the body’s energies, particularly Vata and Kapha doshas.
The benefits of Nasya are extensive and profound. It helps in relieving chronic headaches, sinusitis, migraines, nasal congestion, allergies, and respiratory issues. Nasya also improves mental clarity, enhances memory, sharpens the senses, and supports emotional balance. Regular practice of Nasya can promote healthier skin, better sleep, and a stronger nervous system. By nurturing and detoxifying the head region, Nasya therapy offers a deep sense of rejuvenation, supporting both physical and mental well-being.
RAKTHA MOKSHANAM (BLOOD LETTING THERAPY)
Raktamokshana is a traditional Ayurvedic therapy focused on the controlled removal of impure blood from the body to cleanse and balance the system. It is one of the five main purification procedures of Panchakarma, specifically designed to address diseases caused by blood impurities and Pitta dosha imbalance. Raktamokshana can be performed through various methods, such as using leeches (Jalaukavacharana) or controlled venesection, depending on the patient’s condition. This treatment is conducted under the supervision of skilled Ayurvedic practitioners to ensure safety and maximum therapeutic benefit.
The benefits of Raktamokshana are powerful and targeted. It is highly effective in treating chronic skin diseases like eczema, psoriasis, acne, and pigmentation disorders.
